Submarine Tactical Simulator (DATAS): Enhancing Submarine Personnel Training with High-Fidelity Simulations

The Submarine Tactical Simulator (DATAS) is a cutting-edge, high-fidelity, real-time simulator developed by TÃœBÄ°TAK BÄ°LGEM BTE and Ä°LTAREN, specifically designed to provide comprehensive tactical training for submarine personnel. DATAS offers all the necessary tactical training capabilities to ensure the effective use of Türkiye’s submarine systems.

What sets DATAS apart is its development entirely through national resources, with a strong emphasis on research and development. The simulator incorporates all the algorithms and software related to submarine systems and external world models, making it a fully indigenous solution. The final phase of the project was successfully completed in May 2014, leading to the delivery of the system to the Naval Forces Command.

The introduction of DATAS has significantly enhanced the training capabilities of submarine personnel. It allows for the creation of tactical situations and threat environments that closely mimic real-world conditions, providing a safe environment to practice various scenarios that would otherwise be too risky due to the potential loss of life and property. The simulator also plays a crucial role in reducing training costs while offering the flexibility to apply different scenarios for the training of submarine commanders, officers, and operators.

DATAS is housed in a dedicated two-storey building at the Naval Command in Gölcük. This facility includes the Instructor Control Room, where training sessions are meticulously planned and executed, the Switchboard Room, where the training takes place, and the Debriefing Room, where post-training evaluations are conducted. The project was meticulously designed and executed by MSB-ARGE to address the training needs identified by the Naval Forces Command. Over the course of nine years, approximately 60 experts from BİLGEM and its subcontractors contributed to the successful realization of this project.
